Summary: How can such a great series go so bad?
Comment: The Anita Blake series is one of my favorites. At least the first ten books or so. After this one, I officially give up. What happened to the spook squad? Isn't she supposed to be working with the police? But all of those characters just disappeared without an explanation several books ago, so that Anita could spend 4oo or 500 pages having sex with hot guys. Usually several of them at once. I get that considering what a prude she was in the first book, that some might actually consider this character development. I think I'm done with the series.

Summary: Another Great Book About Anita Blake!
Comment: Blood Noir was one of my favorite books in the Anita Blake series. First of all the fact that you get to see more from Jason, who I have thought was one of the most lovable werewolves. Laurell K. Hamilton has a way of mixing romance with action and adventure in a way that doesn't seem completely pornographic. The story was well written and kept my interest from the second I picked the book up till I read the last word.
I've read a lot of mixed reviews about this book and I can't seem to help but wonder why. I read quite a few bad reviews right here on this site before I read the book and thought they just might be right. Although, when I started reading the book I knew they were wrong. The things they seem to find wrong with the book I couldn't figure out how exactly they came to those conclusions, it was as if we were reading completely different books.
One of the main reasons people didn't seem to like it is because it's so much different from how the stories were when she first started the series. All I have to say to that is of course it's going to be different. If she kept the stories the same book after book there wouldn't be 16 fabulous Anita Blake stories that seem to be just as well received.
In the humble opinion of an avid book reader, and lover, Blood Noir by Laurell K Hamilton is a must read for all fans. By that I mean fans of: Laurell K Hamilton, Anita Blake, Vampires, the Supernatural, or just books in general.

Summary: A comeback of sorts?
Comment: I collected first editions of the first 10 Anita Blake series - in duplicate. However, the succeeding books in the series degenerated into such gratuitous sexual permutations with a few pages of plot thrown in that I'm selling one set, and have passed on the "opportunity" to acquire more books in the series. This book is beginning to reverse the trend of those later volumes. Now if Hamilton could only allow Anita Blake to share the pages with a few female leads, if not strong characters, and keep the sexual proclivities to those that advance the plot . . .

Summary: Some good, some bad, but mostly bad
Comment: I get that she's a succubus, and that she really is involved in quite a few committed relationships, but why are the parties in love? I can see the ardeur pairing her up with Nathaniel and Micah (explained in the last book), but I still don't get the relationships with Jean Claude, Asher and Richard. The latter in particular has made her feel particularly bad, but they can't seem to stop hurting each other. At least in this book she realized that she was giving Richard her anger, and that she could take it back.
Anita, while quite strong, is more REactive than PROactive when it comes to her powers. She seems to stumble over things rather than investigate what she can and can't do. Most of the "insights" come from those around her, and then she has her "AHA" moment.
She has repeatedly discovered that Jean Claude keeps her in the dark about, well, most everything. She gets a huge amount of information from third parties, especially from Jason in this book, and yet that doesn't seem to particularly bother her in the long term. It should! If he has info she needs, keeping her in a bubble isn't a smart idea for any of the parties. They have to deal with a lot of political/power issues, but she's usually the last to find out what's what.
Richard's self loathing is getting REALLY old, and so is his extreme jealousy of Anita's antics while he's doing everything female he can find. He seems to take one step forward and two steps back on a routine basis.
Nathaniel isn't a major player in this book, but in the last two, he seemed to be coming more into his own, and Anita finally realized that she had to go to Asher for some info on the BDSM scene to make her live-in lover happy in the long term. Of course that isn't explored for the reader, but the other sex scenes are quite graphic.
In summary, this book was the worst of the bunch, and it wasn't until the end where things really picked up. Too bad I had to go through hundreds of pages to get there.

Summary: Stand in line to skip this one if you expect plot
Comment: There is an overarching plot in most of the Anita Blake novels, but you won't find it in this one. There is one, and only one thing that happens that would change the structure of the world for the characters, and it isn't given much attention. SPOILER WARNING! So you don't waste your time with this book, here's the goody: weretigers have a way to breed successfully. That should make a huge difference to the shapechanger population, since none of the rest of them can carry a pregnancy to term.
